Try a Merlot from Chile or Australia. They are great values and are easy to drink.

You live in Trader Joe's territory? Two Buck Chuck Merlot is good enough to drink.

Price is a matter of perception, but Yellow Tail from Australia can't be beat, plus they have a variety of wines depending on the food you are having to accompany it.

I'm rather fond of Turning Leaf and Sutter Home. Pinot Noir or Cabarnet Sauvigon are both good.

First you need to determine the type of red wine you like. This will help you when you want to pick a bottle in the future. 5-7 people can't tell the difference in a cheap red and an expensive red when put to a blind taste test. Shiraz (my favorite) is a bit of a spicy red Merlot- probably the most common red for a person to buy, everyone knows Merlot. It's rare to find one that isn't okay to drink. You won't often be shocked buying this wine, any label is okay for the most part. And if you don't like it you can cook with it. Cabernet sauvignon- probably what you graduate to after Merlot. This is the red you drink with a good stew or red-meat dinner. Malbec- I don't know much about this grape. I hardly ever see it on a shelf. Zinfandel- depends on the wine, be careful buying this till you learn more about red wines, they are all very different depending on the grape Pinot noir 2nd in heartiness Sangiovese- medium-bodied Barbera- I cook with this one. Definitely a bottle you can drink while you pour it into your sauce. = ) I typically stick with a Merlot a Cab or a Shiraz. Merlot for not with dinner, Shiraz with steaks, and Cab for pastas works as a general guideline if you don't know much about red wines.
