First you pour a little wine in the glass and swirl it, hold it up so the light shines through it, look at the color (clarity), and how it runs down the sides of the glass (should be wide ribbons). then sniff the wine, putting your nose into the glass and sniffing deeply a couple of times. Then, take a small sip, roll it around on your tongue and swallow. Take another small sip and breathe in a little through your mouth to be able to taste and smell at the same time. True wine tasters don't swallow, they spit it into another cup, but probably your wine tasting party is the kind where you swallow. These are the steps most people follow, but you might want to glance around to see what others are doing and imitate them unless they are doing something really different or gross. |

Been to over 30 of them. I agree with the spitting. Even though its traditional, I still swallow what i taste. If I plan on trying many wines, I will just drink one sip and toss the rest (most tastings give you far more than one sip). Eat a little after every 2-3 tastes and drink a little water to cleanse the palate. And, if you plan on drinking reds and whites, drink the whites first, reds second. Drink lighter wines before heavier wines. If they offer any fortified wines (like port), dont drink them until you are done tasting. |

I have been wine tasting many times. Napa, Sonoma, Midwest....and you don't need to do all those fancy things. I sometimes sniff it before I bring it to my lips...then I usually just go straight to tasting it. |

If it is a formal wine tasting, you probably swirl, sniff, sniff again, sip, and spit. If it is a wine tasting for fun, you sure can drink it if you like it. Just enjoy yourself. . |

Yes I have, they have a real fancy name for it; but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the group of people that get together and do it. They were a real bunch of high class snobs hee hee. I fit right in. All dressed to the nines. I was dating my boss at the time he was a real nice guy it was rather awkward I was dating him before and then somehow during all the changes I got moved in to his area, oh the scuttlebutt then the sneaking it was so much drama and trauma I could not take it so it did not last much longer and it was too bad he was great all the way around but I could not get out of his area! I tried. Anyway, yes you sniff and try to identify the notes, say a hit of raspberry or floral, swirl look for the legs that is the things that will be left on the glass the will be long and thin or long and far thin not too sweet fatter sweeter short even sweeter pay close attention to the cork, if it has lots of marks running down it the line has leaked a little and may have a slight vinegar taste sip it see if you can identify the cask, oak, or some other wood. spit if you do not want to get too drunk, however it us usually just a small taste and the do usually have crackers and fruit to clear your palate they may have some ports those are rather sweet and tasty after diner wines served with chocolates and very tasty if you are fond of sweets and you will notice a big difference on the legs on those. Well Stacy from what little I learned I hope this helps. |

I have never been to a big official one, no. Just been offered to try some varieties at the local wine rack etc. Found out I am not a big fan of port. They will probably offer you something to cleanse your palette in between varieties. You cant drink the sips they give you or you won't make it through all the tastings without it all going to your head, which will impair your ability to judge and taste each wine properly. But, hey if you really like one or two what's a few swallows here and there, right? :) |

Went to one in Australia. Man, they gave us free wine. And the weather was hot. And the blood was thin. And we were on a river-boat. I think. |
