Smaller amounts of wine were stored in clay or ceramic flasks, metal flasks, wooden vessels and also in sacks made from animal stomachs and skins. |

Cask [KASK] 1. A large, strong, barrel-shaped, leak-proof container generally used for storing wines and other spirits. Most wine casks are made of oak. 2. The quantity such a container holds. wine·skin (wÄ«n'skÄn') n. A bag made from the skin of a goat for example, and used for holding and dispensing wine. Wine in small quantities was stored in wineskins. The wine was usually drunk in the year that it was made because of storage problems (ie no sulfur allowed in the winemaking process). |

I've never heard of a "cask " (doesn't mean there wasn't one). For traveling, they may've used a "flask ". A flask could've been made of various materials....many of them mentioned already: leather, animal skins, gourds, etc.... The modern version of a flask would be a canteen. They are made of all metal though. |

It realy depends on where the wine is. Wine skins (bags made from animal stomacs) were used in various places, from the middle east to Europe. Ceramics were also popular from the large ceramic flasks used by the greeks to smaller ceramic bottles used in eastern Asia. Barrles have also been used, but more for mass storage then distribution. |

Clay pots or jugs. I am reading a great book called "The history of the world in 6 glasses " that relates the historical impact of beer, wine, cola, tea, coffee etc.-- |
