Question: What are the steps and costs involved in opening a retail wine business in the bay area?
(Posted by: Ryan F on 2006-06-13 13:16:59)
What permits/ licenses are required, from whom, and how long does it typically take to acquire them (and for how much)? How much does will it cost to acquire inventory? Any other key hurdles/ requirements to get up and running? In the San Francisco Bay Area |

Doofusses! "The Bay Area " refers to the area around San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda, San Mateo, San Jose... you get the picture. I would say that the biggest hurdle is the cost of renting a retail space. If you're looking at downtown(ish) San Francisco then I would forget it. There are already a zillion wine stores in that part of the city alone and you may be looking at rent of $6,000. |

Geez, buddy, more than you can imagine. Everyone wants to live there who can afford it, and doesn't have a family to pay for, and the wine business is cut-throat. You need to be well-capitalized and have plenty to live on in case you don't break even. Owning a wine store in the Bay area would be a hobby for most. I would do it, too, if I could. |
