Port Wine Information

Question: What is port wine and what could i substitute for it?

I found a recipe that called for a cup of Port wine. I looked and none of the bottles said "port ". I am only familiar with it in cheese. I am guessing it is a sweeter red wine but I really have no clear idea. So far the count is 2 saying it is dry and two saying it is sweet. Help I need a tie breaker.

Port wine is fortified wine made in portugal. if you are needing it for cooking, looking in the vinegar isle at your local grocery store. they usually sell the cheaper ports for cooking there!! you might also be able to use regular red wine or cooking sherry in its place. good luck!

Port is a fortified dry red wine, usually used for dessert or an apertif (before the meal), it's flavor should really be kept in a recipe but if you have to replace it use a dry red wine

Port is very sweet and smooth. A wine with a "5 " sweetness would do. If you have sherry just put it a little less than a cup.

Port is a sweet red wine, they also have a white one. But the recipe normally is talking about a red wine. You can substitute a red sweet wine. It normally comes from Portugal. Red cooking wine could be substituted also. We normally buy a bottle of sweet red wine and drink the rest.
